Which clematis is this? The buds reveal more than the leaves

The photograph shows a small-flowered clematis with dark stems and dense clusters of buds in September. That combination points to an autumn-flowering type rather than a large-flowered variety.

This is a small-flowered, autumn-flowering clematis, rather than a large-flowered one. Sweet autumn clematis, Clematis terniflora, is the closest match. The small, rounded buds form branching clusters, the stems are dark purple-brown, and the leaves are fairly light green and pointed.

In Sweden in September, it is quite plausible for it still to be in bud rather than full flower. If this identification is right, it should soon open many small, white, scented flowers together. If the flowers turn out to be bell-shaped or noticeably larger, the identification will need revisiting, but the autumn clematis group best fits what is visible now.

To distinguish it from other small-flowered clematis once it blooms, look above all at the flower shape: open, star-like white flowers in great clouds suggest sweet autumn clematis. Wait until it opens before giving it a firm name, but you can already treat it as a small-flowered, autumn-flowering clematis.
