What is this plant, and is my dwarf birch in the right spot near the woodland?

The small, rounded, finely toothed leaves and dense woody growth point in a clear direction. The main question is whether the woodland-edge position in Hartungviken helps or hinders it.

The leaves and growth fit dwarf birch well. Small, almost round leaves with fine teeth and thin woody branches suit that identification better than an ordinary young birch.

You say it grows near woodland, in partial shade in Hartungviken, Sweden, which sounds like a good position. Dwarf birch often does best where it is bright without being scorching all day, including woodland-edge settings. The main thing is to avoid prolonged hot, dry soil or heavy, permanently wet ground.

In late August, moving it is not a good idea if it seems happy where it is. Instead, watch next season’s growth: if it stays dense, produces normally sized leaves and develops few brown leaf edges, the position is working. If it thins out or its leaves dry during summer, it needs more consistent soil moisture rather than more sun.

The reader’s original question

What is this plant, and is it planted in the right place?

Submitted

Tomasgreen asked
How much sun does the planting position get?
Why we asked
Wind, sun and shade affect whether a birch will thrive there and whether it may eventually outgrow the space.
The reader’s answer
Partial shade (a mixture of sun and shade)
Tomasgreen asked
Was this plant planted by you or someone else, or is it a wild or self-sown seedling?
Why we asked
For an intentionally planted specimen, the question is whether it needs pruning or moving; a wild seedling may instead be removed.
The reader’s answer
Planted by me or someone else
Tomasgreen asked
Is there anything else you would like to add in your own words?
Why we asked
Your own observations and experiences can help make the answer more specific.
The reader’s answer
It is near woodland
