Small, fuzzy fruits on the branch: are they really pears?
They do not yet look like ripe shop-bought pears, but the narrow neck and the ‘star’ at the tip reveal their identity. The photograph also helps explain why they are still so small in early September.

These are pears on a pear tree. The young fruits have the characteristic pear shape with a narrow neck, and the dried flower remains are still at the tip, which is very common in pears.
Their small, slightly dull, almost fuzzy appearance is because they are not fully ripe. Pears can still be unripe in early September, especially farther north. If you want to eat them, leave them until they have finished growing, then pick when the background colour begins to lighten and they come away easily with a gentle lift.
