Pruning a 15-year-old apple tree: why timing matters more than you might think
You have a healthy apple tree, around 15 years old, in your garden. The question is not whether it can be pruned, but when pruning will suit it best. For an established tree, the season affects both the strength of its response and how steadily the cuts heal.
For an established, healthy apple tree in this Swedish setting, the best pruning period is July to September, known in Sweden as JAS. The tree is still growing but usually responds less vigorously than to late-winter pruning, which suits the aim of managing the crown without encouraging lots of water shoots.
As it is now September in Sweden, you can still prune lightly: remove dead, damaged or crossing branches and thin carefully where the crown has become dense. Avoid removing a lot at once late in the season. If the tree needs more substantial work, spread it out and continue during the next July-to-September period rather than pruning hard now.
Late winter is sometimes used for apple trees too, but it often produces stronger regrowth. For a garden tree around 15 years old, July to September is therefore usually the more straightforward choice if you want to preserve its shape, light penetration and fruit quality rather than encourage vigorous new growth.
