Tulip bulbs: plant now or wait?
A bag of bulbs, a spot in the garden and a question of timing. Prepare for planting and look after the bulbs if you need to wait.
Spring tulips begin with a decision in autumn. “When is it time to plant tulip bulbs?” is a familiar question when the bulbs are already at home. Start by choosing where you want to see the colour: by the entrance, from the kitchen window or along a path.
Choose the place before the date
Tulip bulbs are planted in autumn. Choose a sunny position and soil that drains well. If the ground is waterlogged, improve the drainage or choose another spot before planting. Local weather and soil conditions mean that one calendar date is poor advice for everyone.
Make planting straightforward
- Check the bulbs. Choose firm, healthy ones without rot.
- Follow the planting depth and spacing on the packaging for your particular bulbs.
- Mark the spot after planting so that you know where the bulbs are when the border looks empty.
If you need to wait
Keep the bulbs cool and dry until they can be planted. Do not leave them in damp conditions. Check them again when it is time to plant.
