Is my pothos cutting doing well in water, or is it time to plant it?

Your cutting is positioned correctly and its pale roots are growing. What matters now is not adding more water, but choosing when to move it from the glass to compost without disrupting its start.

A green cutting with variegated leaves stands in a glass of water.

This is a pothos, and the photograph shows that the cutting has rooted well in water. Roots are emerging from the nodes on the stem, which is exactly what you want. The leaves look firm too, so it appears healthy at present.

Keep only the part of the stem with nodes under water, not the leaves. Change the water regularly to keep it clear, and put the glass somewhere bright without strong direct sun. As it is September and light will soon diminish in Sweden, rooting may be a little slower than in summer, but pothos usually still roots well indoors.

You can plant it once it has several roots roughly three to five centimetres long. Use a small pot of airy potting compost, water thoroughly the first time and keep it lightly moist for the first few weeks, rather than wet. Leaving it in water for too long can make the move to compost slower, so the next step is to let the roots grow a little longer, then pot it up.
